PIN blocked, PUK forgotten - how to regain access to an electronic signature?

PIN and PUK - two short codes that determine your access to electronic signature. See what happens if you lose them.

Help! I've lost my PIN! What is the PUK? What to do?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from our clients. In the world of electronic signatures and cryptographic cards, a lost PIN or lack of knowledge of the PUK can effectively paralyze daily work. Therefore, rest assured: we explain everything step by step.

What is a PIN and what is it used for?

A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is the code you enter when you want to use a qualified signature, such as with a cryptographic card.

The PIN protects access to the certificate's private key on the card (e.g. Certum Mini) or in the cloud (e.g. SimplySign).

AND PUK?

PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) is an unlocking code that allows you to restore access to a certificate stored on your card or in the cloud. A wrongly entered PIN three times will block access to the signature. Then only the PUK will be able to unlock the operation of the card in case the PIN is blocked. Similarly, the PUK provides the ability to change the PIN.

Note that a three-time misrouted PUK code completely blocks access to the signature.

We have no way to reproduce it and it is necessary to purchase a new signature including proof of identity.

How many characters does the PIN and PUK consist of? What characters are accepted?

PIN / PUK should contain min. 6 characters, maximum 64 . It can contain digits, uppercase and lowercase letters, it should not contain any special characters. (In Certum Mini and SimplySign).

The exact requirements depend on the card or token manufacturer. For Certum (Asseco) solutions, this information can be found in the documentation or card management panel.

How many times can I misspell my PIN or PUK?

  • PIN: you have 3 attempts. After three wrong entries, the signature is blocked.

  • PUK: you also have 3 attempts. After all possibilities have been used signature is permanently blocked and is no longer usable.

I lost my PIN! Should I be stressed?

No need to panic. If you have a PUK, you can unlock the card and set a new PIN. The problem only arises when you have neither PIN nor PUK.

I don't have a PUK. What now?

If you have lost your PUK and cannot unlock the signature, unfortunately there is no way to recover it. The PIN in the signature used for authentication and authorization, giving legal force to signed documents is secured in such a wayso that not even the manufacturer has access to your data.

Solution: it is necessary to order a new qualified certificate i new card.

Does anyone store my PIN or PUK? Can I ask for them to be sent to me?

No. Neither podpisano.pl nor Certum (Asseco) store this data. PIN and PUK are generated locally and known only to you.

This is one of the basic tenets of qualified signature security.

Why doesn't Asseco (Certum) store the PIN/PUK?

In accordance with eIDAS standards and security rules, The supplier must not have access to your private key or the data protecting it (PIN/PUK).

Only you are their owner. This ensures full control over your signature and its legal force.

Why keep your PIN and PUK in a safe place?

Because losing them means, in practice, having to buy a new service. A good solution is:

  • Write the PIN/PUK on paper and hide it in the safe,
  • Or use a secure password manager.
Summary
  • Have you lost your PIN? Use the PUK and set a new one.
  • You lost your PUK, you can no longer do anything. Don't forget the PIN, because then you will have to buy a new signature.
  • Have you used up all the iterations of PIN/PUK usage? You need to order a new signature.
  • Do not pass the PIN/PUK to anyone.
  • There is no way to recover them by the manufacturer or by podpisano.pl.
