Digital nightmare: Loss of a qualified signature. How to protect yourself?

Already, our cell phones and qualified signature cards have become key tools in digital identity management. Many people are concerned that losing a phone or card could mean instant access to a qualified signature. However, it's worth putting this issue into perspective - whether it's an app with a certificate stored in the cloud or a physical card, security is maintained as long as we follow the basic rules of protection.

Safety - the foundation of any method

Cloud signature - mobility and flexibility

  • No immediate risk of access. Although losing a phone with the app SimplySign may cause concern, the certificate remains secure. To gain access, it is necessary to know the PIN and login information for the device.
  • Easy reconfiguration. If you lose your phone, all you have to do is install the app on a new device and perform the verification process. This ensures that the qualified signature is not "lost" - we have continuous access to it without having to create a new signature.
  • Updates and management. Regular software updates and the inclusion of remote management functions (locate, lock, delete data) significantly increase the level of security.

Signature written on a card - a traditional solution with challenges legal handwritten signatures.

It is a type of electronic signature that:

  • is uniquely attributed to the signer,
  • allows identification of the signer,
  • is submitted using data that only the signer has access to,
  • is linked to the data to which it is attached in such a way that any subsequent change in the data is detectable.

  • Physical security. The certificate stored on the card (Certum Mini) is protected by physical security features. Loss of the card does not mean automatic access to the signature - additional data (PIN, authorization procedures) are needed.
  • Consequences of losing. Unlike the cloud solution, losing a card means having to go through the full process of issuing a new qualified signature. This involves additional paperwork and waiting time.

How to prevent the risk of loss and theft?

Before an incident - be prepared for every eventuality

  • Strong security features
    • Use complicated passwords and PINs.
    • Enable biometric features (fingerprint, facial recognition) if your device supports them.
  • Regular updates. Systematic software updates minimize the risk of security vulnerabilities.
  • Remote management of the device
    • Configure the location function (e.g., "Find my phone").
    • Enable remote locking and deletion of data.
  • Card security. Keep the physical card in a place where only authorized persons have access.

At the time of loss - act quickly and decisively

  • Locking the device
    • Immediately lock your lost phone using the remote management function.
    • Notify the operator to block the SIM card.
  • Contact your signature provider
    • Deactivate your existing qualified signature If your provider gives you the option to temporarily disable your signature, then you can use this option.
  • Notification of services
    • File a notice of theft or loss. Keep copies of the report as proof.
  • Change login information. Update passwords and PINs for all accounts associated with the lost device.

Signature access recovery - step by step

There is no way to regain access to a lost signature. The only option is to apply for a new one, including re-confirmation of identity.

Identity verification

  • Contact your qualified signature provider.
  • Select the type of signature you want to purchase and its validity period.
  • Confirm your identity with him on the basis of your ID card, eCertificate or passport. Install a new certificate after it is issued.

Whether you use a qualified signature stored in the cloud or on a physical card, the key is to remember: Security depends mainly on your actions. Proper security - both technological and procedural - minimizes the risk of unauthorized access, and knowing the differences between solutions allows you to take the right steps in case of loss or theft.

Losing your phone does not automatically give you access to the certificate - without knowing your PIN and login information, your data remains safe. And a cloud-based solution offers added convenience: reinstalling the application on a new device allows you to quickly regain access, a significant advantage over a traditional card, where loss means a new signature must be issued. Take care of your data, update your security regularly, and always have a backup plan ready!

With an informed approach and appropriate protection measures, losing a device doesn't have to be a digital nightmare. The key is prevention, quick response and knowledge of the differences between certificate storage methods.
